In a major win for BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the Karnataka government’s appeal in a case accusing him of spreading misinformation, delivering a sharp rebuke to the state for attempting to politicise legal proceedings.
Reacting to the verdict, Surya said the ruling exposed the Congress-led government’s alleged misuse of state machinery for political vendetta. “This judgment should serve as a lesson,” he posted on X, adding that the FIR was filed at the behest of a minister as part of a targeted misinformation campaign against him.
He further accused the Congress of repeatedly misusing the police and judiciary to attack its political opponents.
The case revolved around a November 2024 social media post by Surya, where he cited reports from Kannada news outlets suggesting a farmer in Haveri had died by suicide after allegedly learning that his land was taken over by the Waqf Board. The post was later deleted when the claim was found to be baseless.
Despite the Karnataka High Court quashing the FIR against him, the state government escalated the matter to the Supreme Court. Today, the apex court not only threw out the appeal but also issued a stern warning to the state, urging it to refrain from politicising the judiciary.

“What is this? Don’t politicise the matter. Fight your battles before the electorate,” said a bench led by Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran, as it rejected the state's plea and imposed costs on the government.
