Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy triggered widespread controversy on Tuesday with his remarks made during a public event in Hyderabad, where he questioned the estimated three crore Hindu deities and their associations with different lifestyles. He stated that bachelors worship Hanuman, those who marry twice have another deity, alcohol drinkers follow a different god, chicken sacrificers have their own, and even consumers of lentils and rice revere a separate one. The comments were perceived by many as dismissive of Hindu religious diversity.
The Bharatiya Janata Party's Telangana unit swiftly condemned Reddy's statements on social media platform X, describing them as a blatant display of the Congress party's alleged anti-Hindu bias. They accused the chief minister of crossing boundaries of decency by mocking Hindu faith from a public platform and intentionally insulting devotees. The party emphasised that such rhetoric was not accidental but a calculated effort to undermine Hindu traditions for political advantage.
In their detailed post, BJP leaders highlighted specific quotes from Reddy's speech to underline what they termed as venomous attacks on core Hindu beliefs. They argued that the remarks exposed the Congress's inherent tendency to malign Hindu practices and create societal divisions. The opposition demanded accountability and urged the public to recognize this as the true character of the ruling party.

This incident follows Reddy's earlier comments last month during a by-election rally in Jubilee Hills, where he affirmed Congress's commitment to minorities by equating the party with Muslims and stressing equality between Hindus and Muslims under his government. He claimed that only Congress has provided significant positions to minorities without discrimination. These statements had already drawn attention to his approach towards communal harmony.
Political analysts view the latest episode as part of ongoing tensions between Congress and BJP in Telangana, where religious and cultural issues often become flashpoints ahead of elections. The controversy has amplified calls for respectful discourse on faith matters from public figures. As reactions pour in from various quarters, it remains to be seen if Reddy will clarify or retract his words amid growing pressure.
