Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday alleged a “conspiracy” by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the proposed delimitation exercise, claiming it could reduce the political influence of southern states and create “injustice” for women, Scheduled Castes (SCs), and Scheduled Tribes (STs).
Speaking at a public event after paying tribute to B. R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, Reddy said the proposed redistribution of parliamentary constituencies could disproportionately benefit northern states such as Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat at the expense of southern states like Telangana and Kerala.
He argued that states in the south, which have historically achieved population control targets under national policy, could end up losing proportional representation if seat allocation is increased strictly on population-based formulas. He cited projections suggesting that states like Uttar Pradesh could see a significant rise in Lok Sabha seats, while southern states may see comparatively smaller gains.

Reddy said he was not opposed to the proposed Women’s Reservation Bill but insisted that delimitation should not create regional imbalance. He proposed a “hybrid model” in which 50 per cent of new seats are allocated on a pro-rata population basis and the remaining 50 per cent are determined using economic indicators such as Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), to ensure balanced representation across regions.
The Chief Minister also called for wider consultations with political parties before finalising any delimitation framework, urging the Centre to build consensus. He warned that a purely population-based approach could reduce representation for SCs, STs, and women in southern states, even as it may increase their numbers in the north.
In a separate political attack, Reddy criticised the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government in Telangana, alleging inadequate representation for marginalised communities in key positions. He highlighted initiatives under the current Congress government, including appointments in universities, housing schemes, and large-scale recruitment efforts aimed at SCs, STs, and backward classes.
Meanwhile, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy responded that delimitation and women’s reservation are being pursued through structured committees and consultations, and accused the Congress of failing to act on similar reforms when it was previously in power.
