Former West Bengal BJP president and former Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy on Saturday cautioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against a possible revival of the Communist movement in the state. Roy said the party should remain alert to prevent the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from regaining political ground amid what he described as internal challenges facing the Trinamool Congress.
In a social media statement, Roy warned that the BJP should closely monitor any political space emerging from changes within the Trinamool Congress. He argued that the Communist parties could attempt to take advantage of the situation and rebuild their influence in West Bengal, where they ruled for more than three decades before losing power in 2011.
Roy also criticised the political approach of Communist leaders in the state and raised issues related to their outreach strategies. He made comments about religious and electoral considerations within the Communist movement, citing examples from past political developments to support his views. His remarks have sparked debate over the future role of Left politics in Bengal.

Referring to former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Roy recalled statements made by the veteran CPI(M) leader in 2002 regarding alleged extremist activities in some border-area madrasas. Roy said Bhattacharjee later faced pressure from within his party after the remarks were published and had to clarify his position.
Roy also linked his comments to recent developments involving investigations at two madrasas in North 24 Parganas district by the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh Police. He said these developments highlighted concerns that had been raised earlier, though the matter remains subject to official investigations and legal proceedings.
The CPI(M), which suffered a major setback in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections by winning only one seat, has since focused on issue-based political campaigns. The party has taken up several public issues, including protests against the eviction of hawkers under the current state government, as it attempts to rebuild its political presence in Bengal.
