The convoy of Suvendu Adhikari, West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition, was allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters on Tuesday in Cooch Behar’s Khagrabari area during a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) protest outside the Superintendent of Police’s office.
The incident, which occurred around 12:35 pm, saw protesters waving TMC and black flags, shouting “go back” slogans, and hurling shoes at Adhikari’s vehicle, damaging at least one car, including a police escort vehicle’s windshield.
Adhikari, leading a demonstration against alleged attacks on BJP MLAs, accused TMC “goons” of orchestrating the violence, claiming police inaction. “This is peak lawlessness under Mamata Banerjee,” posted BJP leader Sudhanidhi Bandyopadhyay on X.
The TMC dismissed the allegations as a “well-scripted drama” by the BJP to gain sympathy ahead of elections. Local police, supported by central forces, restored order, but tensions persist in the politically volatile district, known for past clashes.
