Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty sharply criticized Union Minister Suresh Gopi on Monday for his “vanara” (monkeys) remark targeting critics who accused him of manipulating voters’ lists. In a strongly worded Facebook post, the senior CPI(M) leader labeled Gopi’s comments “insulting, unfortunate, and undemocratic,” arguing they were unfit for a public representative and undermined public confidence in the democratic process.
Sivankutty stressed that raising concerns about electoral roll irregularities is essential for maintaining election transparency. “Mocking and vilifying those who voice such concerns erodes trust in democracy,” he wrote, calling on Gopi to retract his statement and apologize publicly. “Leaders in responsible positions must use respectful language and avoid personal attacks, even in political disagreements,” he added.
The controversy arose after Gopi, on Sunday, brushed off allegations of voters’ list manipulation by the Congress and Left parties, stating the Election Commission of India would respond. Speaking to reporters, the actor-turned-politician called his accusers “vanaras” and advised them to seek answers in court. The remarks drew a sharp response from Thrissur District Congress Committee president Joseph Tajet, who accused Gopi of using derogatory language to sidestep accountability. “Perhaps he saw a monkey in the mirror,” Tajet retorted, reaffirming Congress’s commitment to pursuing the allegations.

Last week, Congress escalated its claims, accusing Gopi of submitting a false declaration to be included in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency voters’ list for the 2024 general election. The party has filed a police complaint against the Union Minister, demanding action for what they allege is a grave electoral violation.
Sivankutty warned that such provocative language risks alienating voters and weakening democratic principles. “Public representatives must uphold dignity and build trust, not resort to insults,” he said. The dispute has heightened political tensions in Kerala, with the opposition vowing to press forward with their accusations, while Gopi’s comments continue to fuel debate over decorum in public discourse.
