Sukhbir Singh Badal was unanimously re-elected president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday during a spirited general delegate session at the Teja Singh Samundari Hall within the Sri Darbar Sahib complex.
The session saw Balwinder Singh Bhundar propose Badal’s name, seconded by Paramjit Singh Sarna, reaffirming his leadership amid a charged political atmosphere.
The election marks a comeback for Badal, who resigned on November 16, 2024, after being declared ‘tankhaiya’ by the Akal Takht for alleged missteps during SAD’s 2007-2017 governance. The party accepted his resignation in January, triggering a membership drive that culminated in today’s vote.
Senior leaders, including Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Bikram Singh Majithia, and Daljit Singh Cheema, rallied behind him, signaling unity as SAD eyes a revival for the 2027 Punjab elections.
Badal’s return underscores his enduring influence despite past controversies. Addressing supporters, he vowed to strengthen SAD’s grassroots and champion Punjab’s interests. With 567 delegates backing him, the stage is set for Badal to steer the party through turbulent times, aiming to restore its regional dominance.
