Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has launched a significant initiative to reshape Centre-State relations by inviting Chief Ministers and political party leaders across India to provide input on a questionnaire developed by a high-level committee constituted by his government.
In a letter shared with the media on Friday, Stalin emphasized the need to address the growing imbalance in federal power, which he attributes to successive constitutional amendments, Union legislations, and centralized policies that encroach on state autonomy.
Stalin criticized the overreach of Union-level ministries, which he claims duplicate state functions and impose restrictive conditions through Finance Commission grants, centrally sponsored schemes, and micromanaged approvals. “Today, we stand at a defining moment. The need of the hour is to reassess these developments and create a future framework that strengthens true federalism,” he stated.
The committee, chaired by former Supreme Court Justice Kurian Joseph and including former Indian Maritime University Vice-Chancellor K Ashok Vardhan Shetty and former Tamil Nadu Planning Commission Vice-Chairman M Naganathan, aims to formulate recommendations to restore the federal balance.
The committee’s online questionnaire, launched by Stalin on August 23 during a national seminar on Centre-State relations, seeks detailed responses from states and Union Territories. Stalin urged Chief Ministers and political leaders to engage actively, emphasizing that their participation is crucial for crafting a document that reflects the collective will of India’s states.
“This endeavour rises above politics and partisanship,” he noted, calling for a renewed federal spirit to ensure a strong, just, and truly federal Union for future generations.
