Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has written an open letter to protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar, appealing to climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk to end his indefinite hunger strike while assuring demonstrators that their concerns can now be addressed through parliamentary debate. Tharoor said the return of Parliament provides an opportunity for elected representatives to raise the issues highlighted by the movement through democratic channels and legislative processes.
In his letter shared on social media platform X, Tharoor expressed solidarity with the young protesters and said their concerns represented the frustration of a generation seeking answers. He stated that peaceful voices across the country were being heard and described their concerns as a reflection of public anxiety rather than indiscipline. The Congress leader emphasised that democratic institutions must respond to such concerns through dialogue and discussion.
Addressing Sonam Wangchuk directly, Tharoor urged him to withdraw his indefinite fast, saying that the protest had already drawn national attention to the issues being raised. He said Wangchuk’s action had succeeded in highlighting public concerns and appealed to him to preserve his health for future efforts. Tharoor also called on the central government to engage in meaningful discussions with the protesters and work towards resolving their grievances.

The appeal comes as Wangchuk continues his hunger strike in support of demands raised by protesters, including concerns related to examination irregularities. The movement has been linked to the demands of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke, who has called for accountability over alleged examination-related issues, including the NEET paper leak controversy and has sought the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Tharoor said his message was not only from a political perspective but also came from concern over the difficulties faced by students affected by examination controversies. His intervention adds to the growing number of voices from political leaders, public figures and civil society members who have expressed support for addressing the protesters’ concerns while also urging Wangchuk to reconsider continuing his prolonged hunger strike.
Doctors monitoring Wangchuk’s health have reportedly raised concerns over the impact of the extended fast, with his condition being closely watched. As the protest continues, attention remains focused on whether the government and representatives from the movement will enter into further dialogue to address the issues being raised through constitutional and democratic mechanisms.
