Saudi Arabia is in mourning following the death of Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, fondly known as the “Sleeping Prince,” who passed away on Saturday at age 36.
The prince had been in a coma since a near-fatal car accident in 2005 while studying at a military college in London, which left him with severe brain injuries. He was cared for at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh for nearly two decades.
His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, shared the heartbreaking news on X, stating, “With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree, and with deep sorrow, we mourn our beloved son… may Allah have mercy on him.”

Funeral prayers are set for Sunday at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, followed by a three-day mourning period. Despite occasional signs of responsiveness, such as minor hand movements in 2019, the prince never fully regained consciousness.
The “Sleeping Prince” captured widespread attention in Saudi Arabia and beyond, with his family’s steadfast hope and faith resonating deeply.
Prince Al-Waleed, nephew of billionaire investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, became a symbol of resilience, inspiring countless prayers and discussions about medical care and faith across the Arab world.
