Amarinder Singh Raja Warring reaffirmed his allegiance to Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party during the installation ceremony of newly appointed Punjab Congress president Pargat Singh on Sunday, delivering remarks that highlighted continuing factional differences within the state unit. Warring, who stepped down as Punjab Congress chief, said he would remain committed to Rahul Gandhi even if Sachin Pilot, the party's state in-charge, refused him an election ticket in the future. His statement added a political edge to a ceremony intended to mark a leadership transition and project unity ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections.
The event, held at the Punjab Congress headquarters in Chandigarh, brought together several senior party leaders representing different factions. Pargat Singh's appointment comes at a critical time for the Congress, with the Assembly elections less than five months away. Warring, a Lok Sabha MP from Ludhiana, had led the Punjab Congress organisation since 2022. His tenure and continuation as state unit president had faced opposition from several leaders, including those aligned with former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi. The selection of Pargat Singh followed disagreements over the state organisation's leadership and reflected the party's efforts to navigate competing interests within its ranks.
Addressing the gathering in Punjabi, Warring referred to several senior leaders and maintained that he respected his colleagues despite the differences surrounding his leadership. Among those present were Channi, Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Punjab Assembly Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa. Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari and former Punjab chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal also attended the ceremony. With prominent figures from different camps sharing the platform, the event offered an opportunity for the party to demonstrate cohesion. However, Warring's remarks indicated that disagreements over leadership and political influence remained an important feature of the Punjab Congress.

Warring's strongest statement concerned his relationship with Rahul Gandhi and the possibility of being denied a party ticket in a future election. Referring directly to Pilot, he said, “It may happen that next time [Sachin] Pilot sahib might even refuse me the ticket, but I will remain a soldier of Rahul Gandhi and will always stand with the Congress party, with no ifs and buts.” The remark placed his loyalty to Rahul Gandhi at the centre of his address and drew a distinction between his commitment to the party leadership and the possibility of disagreements over electoral nominations. By naming Pilot, Warring also brought attention to the role of the party's central leadership in decisions affecting Punjab's political organisation and candidates.
The outgoing state Congress chief also acknowledged the opposition he had encountered within the organisation. “Undoubtedly, many people opposed Raja Warring and perhaps will continue to do so in the future,” he said, referring to himself in the third person. His comments suggested that he expected internal differences to continue even after the appointment of a new state president. At the same time, he emphasised that he respected other leaders, including those who had opposed him. His speech therefore combined a public expression of party loyalty with a pointed recognition of the disagreements that had shaped the leadership change. The remarks also indicated that the transition would not automatically resolve tensions among the party's competing factions.
Pargat Singh now takes charge of the Punjab Congress organisation at a consequential moment for the party. The approaching Assembly elections place pressure on the state leadership to coordinate senior leaders, strengthen the party's organisational machinery and establish a coherent political message for voters. The presence of leaders associated with different factions at the installation ceremony provided a public display of participation, but the underlying disagreements present a challenge for the new president. The Congress will need to balance the interests of established leaders while ensuring that internal disputes do not overshadow its electoral preparations.
Warring's remarks are significant in this context because they underline the continuing importance of leadership loyalties and ticket distribution within the state unit. His declaration that he would remain committed to Rahul Gandhi regardless of future electoral decisions was also a public assertion that his political allegiance would continue beyond his tenure as state president. For Pargat Singh, the immediate task will be to take forward the organisation while working with leaders whose differences have become visible during the leadership transition. With the election timetable approaching, the party's ability to manage these competing interests and maintain coordination among its senior figures could prove important to its campaign. The ceremony formally marked a change at the top, but the challenge of achieving lasting unity within the Punjab Congress remains.
