Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an independent investigation into allegations of financial irregularities involving donations made to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which manages the Ayodhya Ram temple. The opposition leaders alleged that devotees who contributed money and valuables to the temple project feel betrayed and called for transparency regarding the handling of offerings received by the trust.
In their joint letter to the prime minister, Gandhi and Kharge said that an inquiry should be conducted into the trust’s financial affairs, including the management of cash, gold, silver, and other donations. They argued that the government’s silence over the allegations was unacceptable and urged authorities to ensure accountability and restitution if any wrongdoing is established. Kharge also shared the letter on social media, describing the demand as a call for a comprehensive probe.
The allegations regarding the alleged misuse of temple donations emerged in early June and led to police action in the matter. According to reports, an FIR was registered on June 25 following a complaint filed by the trust, after which eight people were arrested. The controversy also resulted in the resignation of two senior functionaries associated with the trust. Authorities have not yet announced the findings of any final investigation into the allegations.

Gandhi and Kharge also raised questions about the formation and composition of the trust, stating that it was created following directions from the Supreme Court and that its members were appointed by the central government. They alleged that several members have links with organisations associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP). The Congress leaders said those responsible for any financial misconduct should face action regardless of their position or influence.
The opposition leaders demanded that the investigation findings and the trust’s accounts be made public so devotees can understand how their contributions have been utilised. They said transparency in the matter was essential to maintaining public confidence in both the trust and the government. The issue remains politically sensitive, with the allegations drawing attention from opposition parties and supporters of the temple project.
