Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday, accusing him of exposing an "anti-India" mindset through his recent comments on US tariffs. Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati, Sarma criticized Gandhi’s Wednesday statement, where the Congress leader endorsed US President Donald Trump’s claim that India’s economy is "dead" and accused the government of ignoring the 25% tariffs and penalties imposed by the United States, effective from August 1.
Sarma defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic approach, stating, “While Modi engages with global leaders on equal terms with grace and dignity, Gandhi is busy defaming our nation on international platforms.” He further alleged that Gandhi’s remarks over the past week have revealed his true stance. “Initially, people thought he was merely anti-BJP, but his consistent pattern of criticism shows he is anti-India,” Sarma claimed, intensifying the political rivalry.
The chief minister also highlighted Modi’s efforts to strengthen India’s global trade relations, suggesting that Gandhi’s comments undermine national interests at a critical time. “Such statements weaken India’s position and embolden foreign narratives against us,” he added. Sarma’s remarks come amid heightened tensions between the BJP and Congress, with the opposition facing scrutiny over its stance on economic policies and international relations.
