During a heated debate on electoral reforms in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched a strong critique of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing the organization of rejecting the idea of equality in India. Gandhi argued that the RSS favors a social hierarchy in which they perceive themselves at the top.
“The idea that every person in India is equal disturbs my friends in RSS,” Gandhi stated in Parliament, highlighting what he described as the organization’s resistance to democratic and egalitarian principles. His remarks were directed at both the RSS and the ruling government’s approach toward proposed electoral changes.
Gandhi stressed that egalitarian values are essential to India’s democratic framework and warned that ignoring these principles could harm the country’s social fabric. He also urged lawmakers to ensure that reforms strengthen equality rather than reinforce hierarchical structures.

The Congress leader’s comments come amid a larger political debate over the role of ideology in governance, with the RSS often cited as an influential partner in shaping the government’s policies. Gandhi accused the RSS of promoting a worldview that undermines the constitutional promise of equal rights for all citizens.
Members of Parliament from the ruling party responded with caution, emphasizing that policy decisions are driven by governance priorities, not ideology. However, Gandhi’s statements triggered debates across party lines, with opposition members backing his call to uphold equality in all reforms.
The remarks underline the growing political tension surrounding social equity and electoral reforms, highlighting a clash between nationalist organizations and parties advocating for a more inclusive and egalitarian India. Gandhi concluded by stressing that India’s democracy thrives only when every citizen is treated equally, without hierarchy or favoritism.
