Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday criticised the government over the removal of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from his protest site at Jantar Mantar, calling the action “wrong” and accusing the Narendra Modi-led government of suppressing peaceful demonstrations. In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said the government was being guided by the principles of “Asatya” (falsehood) and “Hinsa” (violence). He alleged that Wangchuk’s removal while he was observing a non-violent hunger strike reflected an attempt to silence peaceful forms of protest.
Rahul’s remarks came after Delhi Police shifted Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital on health grounds. Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike, was taken for medical attention after authorities expressed concerns over his condition. The Congress leader described Wangchuk’s protest as a peaceful democratic expression and questioned the manner in which the activist was removed from the protest location. He said peaceful voices should be heard rather than restricted.
Wangchuk’s supporters have also raised concerns over his removal from the protest site, with his wife Gitanjali J Angmo stating that the planned march to Parliament on July 20 would continue. She said that if Wangchuk was unable to participate due to his health, she would lead the march herself. The activist has been protesting on issues related to Ladakh, including demands for constitutional safeguards and greater protection for the region’s environment and identity. His campaign has attracted support from sections of civil society and environmental groups.

The government and police have maintained that the decision to shift Wangchuk to hospital was taken due to medical concerns after his prolonged hunger strike. Authorities have said that the action was intended to ensure his safety and provide necessary healthcare. The incident has triggered political reactions, with opposition parties questioning the handling of the protest and accusing the government of restricting democratic rights. Supporters of the government, however, have defended the police action, citing public safety and medical considerations.
Rahul Gandhi’s statement adds to the growing political debate surrounding Wangchuk’s protest and the broader issues raised by activists from Ladakh. The episode has once again highlighted tensions between protest movements and government authorities over issues of governance, environment, and regional demands. As Wangchuk remains under medical observation, attention is now focused on his health condition and the planned July 20 march. The response from authorities and organisers in the coming days is expected to determine the next phase of the protest.
