A clash broke out between workers of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the opposition Congress during local body election proceedings in Punjab's Qadian constituency on Thursday, escalating political tensions ahead of next year's Assembly elections. The confrontation reportedly occurred in the presence of Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa during the election for the Nagar Council President. Following the incident, the Punjab Congress accused the AAP government of attempting to influence the electoral process with the help of the state police, allegations that have further intensified the political standoff.
The Punjab Congress alleged that the violence was triggered after an attempt was made to forcibly take away a Congress municipal councillor with police assistance, preventing the councillor from participating in the election. The party described the incident as an attack on democratic institutions and accused the ruling party of misusing the police machinery for political gain. No official confirmation of the allegation has been issued by the state government or the police in the information available.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring strongly criticised the AAP government, alleging that it had adopted an authoritarian approach during the election. In a post on social media, Warring questioned whether the Punjab Police was functioning to uphold the rule of law or to serve the political interests of the ruling party. He claimed the alleged actions reflected a disregard for democratic values and warned that the people of Punjab would respond through the democratic process.

The Congress also issued a statement through its official social media account, accusing the AAP government of using pressure and coercion to influence the outcome of the Nagar Council President election. The party alleged that reliance on police support to secure electoral victories demonstrated a loss of public confidence in the ruling government. It further claimed that democratic norms were being undermined through political interference in local body elections.
The latest confrontation comes months after the Aam Aadmi Party registered a dominant performance in Punjab's civic body elections, winning control of eight municipal corporations, 75 municipal councils and 19 nagar panchayats. Despite facing criticism over several political and religious controversies in recent months, the Bhagwant Mann-led government has retained a significant presence in local governance ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the Congress is seeking to rebuild its political position after finishing second in the municipal elections. Although speculation has emerged over internal differences within the party, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has dismissed reports of any rift with former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, maintaining that the Congress leadership remains united and focused on strengthening the party's campaign for the upcoming Assembly elections. The allegations surrounding the Qadian incident are likely to add to the political contest between the two parties in the months ahead.
