The Parliament of India has introduced a brand-new "Health Menu" aimed at promoting wellness among lawmakers, officials, and visitors. This revamped culinary offering is part of an initiative led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to encourage nutritious eating habits without compromising on taste.
The Parliament canteen’s updated menu features a variety of wholesome and calorie-conscious dishes, catering to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian preferences. Designed to support long hours of legislative work, the menu blends traditional Indian flavors with modern nutritional standards, offering meals that are low in carbohydrates, sodium, and calories while being rich in fiber and protein.
Millets, which gained national prominence during the United Nations-declared International Year of Millets in 2023, take center stage in the menu. Some of the highlights include Ragi Millet Idli with Sambhar and Chutney (270 kcal), Jowar Upma (206 kcal), and a sugar-free Mix Millet Kheer (161 kcal). Popular staples like Moong Dal Chilla and Chana Chaat have also been included to appeal to a wider range of tastes.

For non-vegetarian options, lean proteins such as Grilled Chicken with Boiled Vegetables (157 kcal) and Grilled Fish (378 kcal) offer hearty yet health-conscious choices.
The beverage section follows the same health-first philosophy, replacing sugary drinks with green and herbal teas, Masala Sattu, and Mango Panna sweetened with jaggery instead of refined sugar.
In line with broader national health goals, the new menu complements initiatives such as the Fit India Movement, POSHAN Abhiyaan, Eat Right India, and the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted the urgency of reducing edible oil consumption and raising dietary awareness in his Mann Ki Baat address, reinforcing the importance of such efforts.
Speaker Om Birla has also taken active steps toward improving the overall health of MPs by organizing regular health check-up camps and inviting nutrition experts to deliver talks during parliamentary sessions.
This initiative marks a significant shift in how India’s highest legislative body approaches food and wellness. With a clear emphasis on balanced nutrition, the Health Menu is not just a change in diet—it reflects a broader commitment to healthier lifestyles within the nation’s corridors of power.
