Leaders from multiple political parties on Tuesday criticised DMK Youth Wing Secretary and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin over his purportedly derogatory remarks directed at Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and actor Trisha during a public meeting in Thanjavur. The controversy erupted after videos of his speech at the DMK's Cauvery protest circulated widely on social media, prompting political criticism and legal complaints.

The Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) women's wing lodged complaints with the Thanjavur East Police and the National Commission for Women, alleging that the remarks were inappropriate and offensive. Following the complaints, police registered a criminal case against Udhayanidhi Stalin. The incident has intensified political exchanges in Tamil Nadu, with leaders from across the political spectrum calling for greater restraint in public discourse.

MDMK General Secretary Vaiko condemned the remarks, stating that they deserved strong criticism. In a post on X, he said that as the Leader of Opposition, Udhayanidhi should uphold the dignity of public office and adhere to the principles of restraint in speech emphasised in the Thirukkural. Vaiko also observed that the comments were made during a protest on the Cauvery water issue and argued that such language detracted from the seriousness of the matter. He further said that Tamil Nadu's interests in the Cauvery dispute could be better protected if political parties spoke with a united voice.

CPI(M) Tamil Nadu State Secretary P. Shanmugam also criticised the alleged remarks, describing the language used as obscene and unacceptable. He said political discourse should not descend into personal attacks or offensive rhetoric. Meanwhile, actor and BJP State Vice-President Khushbu accused Udhayanidhi of insulting actor Trisha during the public event and questioned whether he would acknowledge his remarks and apologise. She added that speeches demeaning women have no place in public life and urged political leaders to maintain civility and respect in their public addresses.

The controversy stems from Udhayanidhi Stalin's speech at the DMK's Cauvery protest in Thanjavur, where he purportedly made remarks containing double entendres aimed at Vijay and Trisha. The videos quickly spread across social media, triggering widespread criticism and formal complaints. The matter has since become a fresh flashpoint in Tamil Nadu politics, with opposition parties and public figures calling for higher standards of conduct and accountability from elected representatives.
