Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a roadshow in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district ahead of his participation in the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav, a commemorative event marking 75 years since the restoration and inauguration of the historic Somnath temple. The visit formed part of his two-day tour of the state, with large public participation visible along the route.
The roadshow covered an approximately 1.5-km stretch from the helipad to Veer Hamirji Circle near the Somnath temple. A large crowd gathered on both sides of the road to welcome the Prime Minister, waving flags and chanting slogans as his convoy passed. The atmosphere was festive, with security arrangements in place to manage the public turnout and ensure smooth passage of the convoy.
Cultural performances were also organised along the route, adding a ceremonial dimension to the event. Artists from various parts of the country, including West Bengal, showcased traditional dance forms at designated points. The performances highlighted India’s cultural diversity and were arranged as part of the broader celebrations surrounding the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav.

The Prime Minister arrived in Jamnagar on Sunday night and stayed there overnight before reaching Somnath on Monday morning. His visit coincides with the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav, which commemorates 75 years since the temple’s restoration and its inauguration in 1951 by India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad. The Somnath temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, holds deep religious and historical significance in India’s cultural heritage.
During the event, Modi is scheduled to perform several rituals at the temple, including ‘Abhishek’, ‘Dhwaj Pooja’, and ‘Maha Pooja’. As part of the ceremonial proceedings, flower petals are expected to be showered on the shrine from helicopters, adding a symbolic gesture to the religious observances. These rituals are central to the commemorative programme.
Later in the day, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to address a public gathering at Sadbhavana Ground. The address is expected to highlight the significance of the Somnath temple in India’s civilisational history and outline broader themes of cultural heritage, national development, and public participation in preserving historic institutions.
