The Odisha Assembly witnessed yet another day of upheaval as Speaker Surama Padhy suspended two more Congress MLAs, Taraprasad Bahinipati and Ramesh Jena, for seven days on Wednesday, citing “indiscipline” during House proceedings.
This decision, following a motion by government chief whip Saroj Kumar Pradhan, marks the suspension of all 14 Congress legislators in the assembly.
The latest suspensions stem from dramatic scenes during Wednesday’s Question Hour, when Bahinipati and Jena took to the Well of the House, playing gongs in protest. Their actions were a direct response to the suspension of 12 fellow Congress MLAs on Tuesday and part of an ongoing campaign—active since March 7—to demand a House Committee to investigate crimes against women in Odisha.
The party’s persistent demonstrations have clashed with the ruling BJP’s agenda, escalating tensions in the state legislature.
The unrest extended beyond Congress, as the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the principal opposition, staged a walkout during the same session. The BJD demanded reservations for Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Castes (SC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) in education and jobs.
Following their exit, BJD MLAs marched to AG Chhak to honor B.R. Ambedkar at his statue, while a scuffle reportedly broke out at the assembly’s main gate between security personnel and Congress activists attempting to enter.
With suspensions and walkouts dominating proceedings, the Odisha Assembly remains a flashpoint of political contention.
