The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, has set an ambitious target of securing 100 of the 126 assembly seats in the state’s 2026 elections. Speaking at a rally of panchayat representatives in Guwahati on Friday, attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the leaders lambasted the Congress for alleged corruption and neglect during its rule, positioning the NDA’s developmental achievements as the foundation for a landslide victory.
Sarma rallied supporters to protect Assam’s “jati, mati, bheti” (community, land, foundation), pledging to secure land rights for indigenous people while reclaiming land from “unknown” encroachers. He accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and an “Islamic scholar Madani” of threatening him, vowing a fierce response. “We know how to use the ‘hengdang’ (Ahom sword) and give a befitting reply,” Sarma declared, framing the elections as a modern “battle of Saraighat” to defend Assamese identity.
Sonowal, a former Assam CM, criticized Congress for fostering “neglect, terrorism, and disturbances,” claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has transformed the Northeast with peace and development. “Congress has no right to question the BJP government,” he asserted, noting that even 5% of Modi’s efforts would have advanced the region significantly.

Bora, a state minister, accused Congress of allowing fundamentalist forces to grow, contrasting this with the NDA’s success in improving law and order and signing peace accords with insurgents. He praised Sarma’s rapid developmental strides and condemned Congress for a “decentralisation of corruption.” Bora urged NDA workers to strive for the 100-seat goal in the elections, expected in March or April 2026.
Shah echoed the optimism, predicting a third consecutive NDA government in Assam, driven by the transformative policies of Modi and Sarma. The NDA’s confidence is bolstered by its current strength in the 126-member Assam Assembly, where the BJP holds 64 seats, AGP nine, and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) seven. The opposition comprises Congress with 26 seats, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) with 15, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) with three, CPI(M) with one, and one Independent MLA.
The NDA’s electoral strategy emphasizes development, cultural preservation, and security, leveraging initiatives like Mission Basundhara for indigenous land rights and welfare schemes such as Arunodoi 3.0 and Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan. With these efforts, the NDA aims to consolidate its dominance and achieve a historic victory in Assam’s 2026 assembly polls.
