Political tensions escalated on Sunday after National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders strongly reacted to historian Ramachandra Guha’s critical remarks about Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The remarks, which questioned Gandhi’s leadership abilities and described Congress as functioning like a “family firm,” have triggered a fresh round of political sparring between the ruling alliance and the opposition.
The controversy began after Ramachandra Guha, in a published article, commented on the leadership structure of the Congress party, referring to the dominance of the Nehru-Gandhi family. He also questioned Rahul Gandhi’s political approach, stating that he “lacks gravitas” and has struggled to learn from past electoral setbacks. The comments quickly gained traction in political circles and media discourse.
Leaders from the NDA, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), used Guha’s remarks to intensify their criticism of Rahul Gandhi. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla described Gandhi as a “non-performing asset” in politics and alleged that he has faced rejection across multiple levels, including elections and within his own party. He further argued that leadership within the Congress requires reconsideration.

Senior BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain also echoed similar views, stating that the Congress party lacks effective leadership and has struggled to maintain consistent electoral success under Rahul Gandhi. He added that occasional victories in certain states, according to him, do not reflect broad public support for the party’s leadership structure. The criticism reflects the ongoing political narrative between the two major national parties.
Other NDA allies also joined the debate. JD(U) spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad described Guha’s remarks as significant, given the historian’s past proximity to the Nehru-Gandhi family, and suggested that the comments raise broader questions about leadership within the Congress. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena spokesperson Krishna Hegde said the party should consider leadership beyond the Nehru-Gandhi family if it aims to strengthen its future prospects.
The exchange highlights the continuing political confrontation over leadership within the Congress party, with opposition leaders facing sustained criticism from ruling alliance members. The remarks have further intensified the national political discourse ahead of upcoming electoral cycles, keeping the debate over leadership, performance, and party direction firmly in the spotlight.
