Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, issued a detailed clarification on social media platform X after her remark about a “suitcase of Rs 500 crore” triggered a nationwide political uproar. The comment had sparked criticism from the BJP, Aam Aadmi Party, and even members of the Congress.
In her post, the former MLA wrote, “I am shocked to see the twist given to a straight comment saying that our Congress party has never demanded anything from us. On being asked about Navjot becoming a CM face from any other party, I stated that we have no money to offer for a CM post. Listen carefully.”
The original statement came on December 6 after she met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria. She had been asked why her husband had not returned to active politics, to which she replied that he would only re-enter if the Congress officially declared him as the Chief Ministerial candidate for 2027. She added they lacked the Rs 500 crore to “buy” the post—words that were widely interpreted as a criticism of money-driven politics.

The remark sparked immediate controversy. AAP leaders questioned whether the supposed “Rs 500 crore suitcase” was meant for the Congress high command or Rahul Gandhi, while BJP leaders, including Sunil Jakhar and Tarun Chugh, cited it as evidence of alleged corruption within Congress. Even within her own party, Sukhjinder Randhawa criticized the couple for engaging in “anti-party” activities.
Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s clarification sought to shift the narrative, emphasizing that she merely intended to highlight that they would never pay money to any other party to secure a leadership position. However, the statement continues to be politicized by rivals as Punjab gears up for the crucial 2027 elections.
The episode has once again put the spotlight on internal dynamics within the Congress and raised questions about the role of money and influence in party politics, with political commentators suggesting the remark could have lasting implications for the Sidhu family’s political ambitions.
