In a major jolt to the Trinamool Congress ahead of the crucial West Bengal Assembly elections expected in 2026, Rajya Sabha MP Mausam Noor officially resigned from the party on Saturday, January 4, 2026, and rejoined the Congress, citing her desire to continue the political legacy of her late uncle, veteran Congress leader Ghani Khan Choudhury, who dominated Malda politics for decades.
Noor, whose current Rajya Sabha term expires in April, is widely expected to contest the upcoming state polls from the Malda region, leveraging her strong familial and electoral base, having previously represented Maldaha Dakshin in the Lok Sabha as a Congress member from 2009 to 2019 and also serving as the West Bengal Youth Congress president during that period.
The formal rejoining took place at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, attended by senior leaders including party general secretary Jairam Ramesh, West Bengal in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir, and state unit president Subhankar Sarkar, underscoring the significance of her return as the opposition seeks to rebuild its foothold in the northern districts against the dominant TMC.

Explaining her decision, Noor declared that West Bengal desperately needs political change and she wanted to lead by example, stating she returned to Congress without any preconditions and pledged to work tirelessly to strengthen the party, particularly in Malda, where residents still strongly identify with Congress ideals of secularism, inclusive development, and communal peace.
Noor confirmed that she had submitted her resignation letter directly to TMC supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, marking a clean break from the party she joined ahead of the 2019 general elections, in a move that could signal further churn within TMC ranks as electoral battles intensify in the state.
