In a significant step towards supporting women affected by the ethnic violence in Manipur, the state government announced a budgetary provision of Rs 350 crore to aid approximately 3.5 lakh women, Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh said on Sunday. The announcement was made at a programme organised by the Social Welfare Department to mark International Women’s Day in Imphal.
The chief minister stated that the funds, granted by the centre, will be included in the upcoming state budget. The initiative is aimed at providing financial relief to women and families who faced severe hardships during the 2023 ethnic conflict, helping them overcome the economic and social challenges that followed. “Women in Manipur have endured immense difficulties, and many families have faced significant financial strain,” Singh noted.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel emphasised the pivotal role of women in shaping the state’s social, political, and economic fabric. He highlighted that the women being honoured at the event represent only a fraction of those whose resilience and determination have guided Manipur through challenging times. Goel underscored the government’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment through progressive policies, targeted programmes, and enabling legislation.

The chief secretary also outlined ongoing initiatives in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, including support services for women in distress under the Mission Shakti framework, the women helpline, and measures to improve the sex ratio under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign. He stressed a shift from women’s development to women-led development, urging collective efforts from government bodies, civil society, and communities to ensure equal opportunities for women.
During the event, notable women achievers such as Olympian weightlifter Ngangom Kunjarani Devi and folk singer Mangka Mayanglambam were felicitated for their contributions. The ceremony was attended by officials from the Social Welfare Department, representatives of women’s organisations, and members of the public, celebrating the resilience, courage, and achievements of women across Manipur.
