Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a blistering attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Election Commission of India (ECI) during a rally marking the foundation day of the TMC’s student wing, Trinamool Chatra Parishad.
Banerjee accused Shah of hypocrisy in alleging TMC’s “dynasty politics” while pointing to his son Jay Shah’s role as International Cricket Council chairman, questioning, “Is that not a dynasty?” She also lambasted the ECI, indirectly dubbed a “lollipop” of the BJP-led government, for alleged corruption through bureaucrats and police officers linked to commission members, threatening to expose their “Pandora’s box” of undemocratic practices.
Banerjee alleged that the BJP was orchestrating a voter suppression campaign, deploying over 500 teams to delete names from West Bengal’s electoral rolls under the ECI’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, which she claimed was a backdoor attempt to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC). She urged supporters to verify voter details directly at polling centers and secure Aadhaar cards, warning against sharing information with surveyors.
Additionally, she accused the BJP of branding Bengali migrant workers as “Bangladeshis,” citing a recent killing in Maharashtra, and criticized their efforts to erase Bengal’s historical contributions, including funding films to defame the state.
With assembly elections looming in 2026, Banerjee accused the BJP of withholding funds for welfare schemes out of “political jealousy” and weaponizing central agencies against opposition parties. She also targeted the CPI(M) for allegedly aligning with the BJP and misrepresenting Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s legacy. Defending her government’s record, Banerjee apologized for delays in recruitment and college admissions due to litigation but vowed to protect voting rights, calling the BJP-led government “selfish giants with Himalayan incompetence.”
Her remarks intensify the political battle in West Bengal, setting the stage for a contentious electoral showdown.
