West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee unleashed a scathing attack on the BJP-led Assam government, accusing it of targeting Bengali-speaking citizens with National Register of Citizens (NRC) notices, branding them as an assault on Bengal’s identity and language. Speaking at the state secretariat, Banerjee highlighted cases of residents in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar receiving such notices, calling the move “unacceptable” and a violation of Bengalis’ rights.
At the TMC Martyrs’ Day rally on Monday, Banerjee had fiercely criticized Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, questioning his authority to issue NRC notices to Bengal’s bona fide citizens. “Just today, another resident from Falakata in Alipurduar got an NRC notice. This is a direct attack on our people’s identity, and we will not tolerate it,” she declared, vowing to fiercely resist such actions.
Banerjee accused the BJP-led Central government of pursuing a discriminatory agenda against Bengalis, alleging attempts to falsely label them as ‘Bangladeshi citizens.’ “The BJP is driven by hatred toward the Bengali language and is trying to impose the NRC in Bengal to undermine our rich history,” she charged. The fiery exchange escalated after Sarma defended Assam’s actions as a response to “unchecked Muslim infiltration,” while Banerjee labeled it a divisive BJP tactic.

“The people of Bengal will fight tooth and nail to protect our rights and heritage,” Banerjee asserted, rallying support against what she called a deliberate policy to marginalize Bengalis. Her defiant stance signals an intensifying battle over identity and regional pride.
