West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of systematically attempting to replace the Indian Constitution with its own party manifesto, claiming that democratic institutions are being weaponized to serve the party’s ambitions.
Speaking on social media, Banerjee criticized the BJP for allegedly using central investigating agencies, national commissions, sections of the media, and parts of the judiciary to target West Bengal. She said that these actions represent an unprecedented assault on the democratic foundations of the country, which she described as “deeply unfortunate.”
The Chief Minister’s remarks came a day after controversy erupted over President Droupadi Murmu’s scheduled participation as chief guest at the International Santal Conclave in Gossaipur, Darjeeling. Banerjee suggested that the controversy highlighted the ruling party’s systematic efforts to undermine West Bengal’s administration.

Banerjee further alleged that the BJP is misusing the Election Commission of India (ECI), which she referred to as the “Vanish Commission,” to erase legitimate voters from the state’s electoral rolls. She framed this as part of a broader strategy to impose the party’s agenda over the constitutional rights of citizens.
“What they want is to replace Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution with their party’s manifesto. I have not stood for this. I will not stand for this,” Banerjee said. She emphasized that her protest dharna at Dharmatala is a response to what she called the “Bangla-Birodhi agenda” aimed at intimidating and persecuting the people of West Bengal.
Concluding her statement, Banerjee invoked the historical spirit of Bengal, asserting that the state, which rose to break colonial rule, will again stand to counteract the BJP’s “inevitable downfall.” She reiterated that while the party seeks power, her priority remains the welfare and rights of the people.
