Maharashtra is gearing up for its local body elections on December 2, 2025, as the first phase kicks off across 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats. This election marks a significant evaluation point of political sentiment following the decisive victory of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in the November 2024 assembly elections. Voters will elect approximately 6,859 council members and 288 presidents using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The Election Commission has registered over 10.7 million voters for these polls, with a nearly balanced gender distribution — 5.379 million male voters, 5.322 million female voters, and 775 transgender voters. To facilitate maximum voter participation, the Maharashtra government has declared December 2 a paid holiday. Under the Labour Department rules, factories, shops, hotels, commercial outlets, malls, IT companies, and other workplaces must either give employees a full day off or allow 2–3 hours of special leave to cast their vote.
However, not all elections will be held on December 2. The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) recently postponed polling in over 20 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, citing procedural irregularities and ongoing court cases. These deferred elections, including Baramati—Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s constituency—will now take place on December 20, with results announced on December 21. Affected areas span across Pune, Marathwada, Thane, Chandrapur, Amaravati, Aurangabad, and other districts.

For those participating on December 2, vote counting will occur the next day, December 3. These local body elections are the first major polls across Maharashtra since the state assembly elections and are widely viewed as an important barometer of grassroots political trends. Outcomes here will influence local governance structures and political dynamics for the years ahead.
