Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge raised suspicions over the abrupt resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, alleging "daal mein kuch kaala hai" (something fishy) and urging the government to clarify the reasons behind it. Speaking to reporters, Kharge noted Dhankhar’s apparent good health and his history of staunchly defending the BJP and RSS, questioning why a loyalist would step down suddenly on July 21, 2025, the first day of the Monsoon Parliament session.
Dhankhar, 74, cited medical reasons in his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, mentioning a recent angioplasty and a fainting spell. However, Congress leaders, including Jairam Ramesh and Gaurav Gogoi, suggested deeper political motives, pointing to tensions after Dhankhar accepted an opposition-backed motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma over a cash recovery scandal, reportedly without government approval. This move, alongside the absence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju at a key Business Advisory Committee meeting, may have strained relations with the BJP-led government.
Kharge also criticized RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s call for "Indianness," accusing the RSS of rewriting history and dismissing works like Jawaharlal Nehru’s Discovery of India. Dhankhar’s tenure, marked by confrontations with the opposition and a failed impeachment motion, ended with his exit sparking speculation about internal BJP conflicts and potential judicial reform disputes.
