Senior Indian National Congress leader K. C. Venugopal on Thursday alleged that “rampant corruption” under the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led government has led to growing public anger in Kerala, claiming that voters are now seeking a change ahead of the upcoming state elections.
Speaking about the political climate in the state, Venugopal said the mood among the electorate suggests dissatisfaction with the current administration led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He argued that several controversies and governance issues have eroded public confidence in the ruling coalition, creating an opportunity for the opposition to regain power.
Venugopal, who also serves as the general secretary of the Congress party and a key strategist for the opposition alliance in Kerala, said the party is intensifying its outreach efforts across the state. According to him, grassroots workers have reported widespread frustration among voters over issues such as corruption allegations, governance challenges and economic concerns.

The Congress leader maintained that the opposition is focusing on presenting what he described as a credible alternative to the current government. He said the party’s campaign would highlight governance reforms, transparency and development, while also addressing concerns raised by various sections of society.
Kerala’s political landscape has traditionally been dominated by two major coalitions—the Congress-led United Democratic Front and the Left-led Left Democratic Front—which have alternated in power for decades. However, the LDF secured a rare consecutive victory in the 2021 state elections under Vijayan’s leadership, breaking the state’s usual pattern of alternating governments.
With the next round of political contests approaching, both alliances have begun stepping up their preparations. Analysts say the campaign is likely to focus heavily on governance performance, corruption allegations, economic management and welfare policies, as parties attempt to sway voters in one of India’s most politically engaged states.
