Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha has accused the Revanth Reddy-led Telangana government of failing to adequately address problems in healthcare and education. At a press conference in Hyderabad, Kavitha described the administration as “incompetent and a total failure” and demanded that those unable to run the government step aside. She also announced a statewide campaign to highlight issues in government hospitals and schools.

Kavitha cited infant mortality figures that she said were obtained through official data and used them to question the functioning of the state’s public healthcare system. According to figures presented by her, around 6,000 infant deaths were recorded in government hospitals in 2020-21, 4,933 in 2022-23 and 3,853 in 2024-25. She also said 1,046 infant deaths were recorded in Hyderabad in 2024-25. These figures were presented by Kavitha as evidence of continuing problems in government healthcare.

She further criticised healthcare spending and alleged that allocated funds were not being fully utilised. Kavitha claimed the government had promised to allocate 10 per cent of its budget to healthcare but was spending less than 5 per cent. She also raised concerns over pending Aarogyasri payments, shortages of hospital beds and long waiting periods for surgeries. Her remarks came amid renewed scrutiny of public hospital facilities following the deaths of infants in a fire at RIMS in Adilabad earlier this month.

Kavitha said TRS leaders would visit government hospitals across every district and document problems with infrastructure and medical services. She also raised concerns about sanitation facilities in government schools, particularly facilities for girls and the disposal of sanitary napkins. Kavitha said TRS workers would inspect schools and, if necessary, raise public contributions to construct toilets and improve basic facilities. Her campaign, she said, would focus on documenting problems and pressing authorities to take corrective action.

Kavitha also announced that TRS would contest the upcoming Khairatabad by-election and demanded enforcement of the 25 per cent free-treatment provision for poor patients at private hospitals operating on government-allotted land. The announcement marks the party’s entry into the electoral contest after its formation, while Kavitha continues to target the state government over healthcare and education. Her allegations and the figures she cited represent her assessment of the government’s performance, while the state government’s response to the specific claims was not included in the material reviewed.
