Former BJP leader K Annamalai has called for accountability over repeated NEET paper leaks, saying the issue has damaged students’ confidence in the examination system. Annamalai, who had previously supported the medical entrance test, said student protests were a result of growing frustration over alleged failures in ensuring a fair and transparent process.

In a detailed post on X, Annamalai said he had backed NEET because he believed a common entrance examination would bring uniformity to medical admissions across the country. He argued that the system could provide students from disadvantaged backgrounds with a fair opportunity to pursue medical education.

However, he said repeated leaks of the NEET UG question paper over the past five years had raised serious concerns. According to Annamalai, the lack of accountability following such incidents created pressure among students and eventually led many of them to protest publicly against the system.

Annamalai questioned why the government did not begin meaningful discussions with protesters earlier and said that demonstrations are a fundamental right in a democracy. He asked why engagement with students and their representatives was delayed until the issue escalated into a larger controversy.

The former IPS officer also cautioned protesters against allowing individuals with separate political or personal interests to take control of the movement. He said that while prolonged protests can attract people with different agendas, students should remain focused on their original demands and ensure that their concerns are not diverted.

Annamalai urged the government to respond through dialogue, transparency and timely action. He said the credibility of educational institutions plays an important role in shaping the future of young people and warned that losing students’ trust in the examination system could have wider consequences for the country.
