Janata Dal (United) National President Nitish Kumar was unanimously re-elected as leader of the party’s legislature wing during a meeting of all 85 newly elected JD(U) MLAs in Patna on Wednesday, setting the stage for him to be sworn in as Chief Minister of Bihar for a record-extending tenth term at the historic Gandhi Maidan on Thursday afternoon.
In a simultaneous development, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s legislature party meeting formally chose Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha as its leaders, ensuring the continuation of the existing arrangement under which both will retain their positions as Deputy Chief Ministers, a decision that underscores the BJP’s firm grip on the second-most powerful offices in the state cabinet.
The decisive reaffirmation of leadership comes on the back of the National Democratic Alliance’s landslide victory in the November 2025 assembly elections, where the coalition secured an overwhelming 202 seats in the 243-member House, with the BJP contributing 89 MLAs, JD(U) 85, Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) 19, Hindustani Awam Morcha 5, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha 4, leaving the opposition Mahagathbandhan far behind.

Despite days of hard bargaining among allies over cabinet portfolios and constitutional posts, the BJP successfully retained the Speaker’s chair and both Deputy Chief Minister positions, while sources confirm Nitish Kumar has resisted pressure to surrender the Home department, with two senior BJP leaders shortlisted for the Speaker’s role to be finalised shortly.
As preparations intensify for Thursday’s high-profile oath ceremony expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top NDA leaders, the solidified power structure signals policy continuity and political stability, allowing the alliance to focus on governance and development in its fresh five-year mandate.
