A devastating fire at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit inside a garment factory in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, has killed seven workers, while two others remain trapped, authorities said on Monday. The blaze broke out in the Khushkhera-Karoli industrial area, where more than 20 workers were reportedly present.
Police discovered the fire during a routine patrol and immediately initiated a rescue operation. While several workers managed to escape, nine remained inside the premises. Seven workers were charred to death before firefighters brought the blaze under control after more than 90 minutes.
Additional District Magistrate Sumitra Pareek confirmed that the factory was operating illegally as a firecracker unit, despite being leased in the name of a garment factory. Skeletal remains were recovered from the gutted unit as rescue teams continued efforts to reach the two trapped individuals.

District Collector Artika Shukla and senior officials arrived at the scene and ordered a full inquiry into the incident. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma instructed immediate relief measures and sent Forest Minister Sanjay Sharma to oversee the operations in Alwar district.
Political leaders across the state expressed grief over the tragedy. Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra demanded a thorough investigation, while former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Opposition Leader Tikaram Jully conveyed condolences to the victims’ families.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the fire as “tragic and deeply saddening” on X, extending condolences and prayers for the injured. Vice President C P Radhakrishnan also expressed grief, emphasizing support for the families. Authorities continue to investigate potential safety violations and illegal operations at the site.
