The elections to 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, including the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), have delivered a decisive mandate in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). With results declared for 2,869 wards, the BJP has emerged as the single-largest force, winning 1,425 wards and establishing clear dominance in the state’s urban political landscape.
The outcome marks a significant milestone for the BJP, which is poised to secure its first mayor in Mumbai. The party’s tally is more than 1,000 wards higher than its nearest rival, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, underlining the scale of its victory. Wins in key urban centres such as Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, traditionally seen as politically competitive regions, have further strengthened the BJP’s organisational base.
The results are also being seen as a personal boost for Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, under whose leadership the elections were fought. Party leaders and observers believe the sweeping mandate enhances his stature within the state and at the national level, giving the BJP a strong foundation ahead of future Assembly and parliamentary contests.

While the BJP emerged as the clear winner, other major parties have found limited reasons for optimism. However, Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar’s respective Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) factions were among the notable underperformers. Despite contesting the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal elections in alliance, the two NCP groups failed to regain control of what were once considered their strongholds.
The inability of the Pawar-led factions to convert their alliance into electoral success has raised questions about their grassroots connection and the effectiveness of their strategy in urban Maharashtra. Analysts suggest that internal divisions and voter consolidation in favour of larger blocs may have contributed to the disappointing outcome.
Overall, the municipal results underline a shifting political balance in Maharashtra’s cities, with the BJP consolidating its urban dominance while regional parties reassess their approaches in an increasingly competitive electoral environment.
