Haryana BJP MLA Ram Kumar Gautam sparked debate in the state assembly by proposing a law mandating parental permission for marriages. Speaking during Zero Hour on Tuesday, the Safidon MLA argued that such a measure is essential given current societal trends, referencing cases where elopements have led to extreme distress for families, including instances of parental suicides. “Boys and girls run away... My request to the government is to make such a law where permission of parents is mandatory,” Gautam stated.
A former JJP member who joined BJP before the 2024 Haryana assembly polls, Gautam also addressed disparities between land collector rates and market rates, urging rectification to curb corruption. His remarks were cut short by Speaker Harvinder Kalyan due to time constraints, prompting Gautam to persist until advised to submit a formal notice for further discussion.
The proposal has ignited discussions on balancing individual freedom with familial responsibilities, with potential implications for Haryana’s social and legal landscape. The assembly’s response to Gautam’s call remains pending, as the government evaluates the feasibility and impact of such a law.
