Prashant Kishor, founder of Jan Suraaj Party, on Tuesday took complete responsibility for the party’s failure to win a single seat in the Bihar Assembly elections, despite contesting 238 of the 243 constituencies, and announced he would observe a day-long “maun upvas” (vow of silence and fasting) as atonement for not achieving the objective of changing the state government.
Addressing the media in Patna, Kishor stated that the party had made sincere efforts but fell short in conveying its message effectively to the electorate. “The responsibility for the public not reposing faith in us lies entirely with me. We will undertake thorough introspection,” he said, adding that the outcome represented a personal failure on his part to mobilise support for systemic change.
The National Democratic Alliance secured a decisive majority with 202 seats, including 89 for the Bharatiya Janata Party, 85 for the Janata Dal (United), and 19 for Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). Kishor acknowledged the scale of the defeat and clarified that, contrary to speculation, he has no intention of quitting politics or leaving Bihar permanently.

Reaffirming a pre-poll commitment with a new condition, Kishor declared that he would retire from public life without reservation if the Nitish Kumar government fulfils its promise of transferring ₹2 lakh each to 1.5 crore women and families — a pledge he described as a ₹40,000-crore electoral commitment. He maintained that the promise significantly influenced the verdict and challenged the government to implement it transparently.
Kishor emphasised continuity of his political journey, stating that defeat is only final when one chooses to abandon the field. He asserted that Jan Suraaj would analyse shortcomings, reorganise, and return with renewed strength, while continuing to hold the ruling dispensation accountable for delivering on its commitments to the people of Bihar.
