AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday mocked the growing “Vijay for Prime Minister” campaign within Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), sarcastically suggesting that the actor-turned-politician could even aspire to become the President of the United States and replace Donald Trump. Palaniswami’s remarks came after TVK leaders Aadhav Arjuna and Sarathkumar publicly backed Vijay for the Prime Minister’s post.

Palaniswami dismissed the pitch as a matter of personal ambition, using sarcasm to question the scale of the claims surrounding Vijay’s political future. He also criticised the government’s reliance on social media content, arguing that projecting political activity through “reels” would not be sufficient for governance. His remarks reflect the increasingly competitive political atmosphere surrounding TVK’s expansion in Tamil Nadu.

The AIADMK leader also targeted the state government over its performance, alleging that the law and order situation had deteriorated within 110 days. He alleged an increase in incidents including murders, robberies and clashes across the state. The allegations come as political parties intensify their criticism of the government and prepare for the wider electoral contest in Tamil Nadu.

The “Vijay for PM” campaign has gained attention after TVK leaders Aadhav Arjuna and Sarathkumar openly pitched the party chief for the Prime Minister’s post. Posters supporting the campaign have also surfaced in Tuticorin, raising concerns among some of the party’s allies. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram had earlier described the pitch as reflecting a “fan club mindset”.

The timing and intended electoral target of the campaign remain unclear. It has not been established whether the push is aimed at the 2029 Lok Sabha elections or a later national election, while Vijay himself has remained silent on the issue. TVK’s political position also remains significant in Tamil Nadu, with the party holding 107 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly, according to the information provided.

TVK ally and MDMK chief Vaiko has sought to distance Vijay from the Prime Ministerial pitch, maintaining that such an ambition was not even in Vijay’s mind or imagination. He also cautioned that ministers should avoid publicly articulating positions that could create complications within the alliance. The competing statements underline the political debate around Vijay’s national ambitions as TVK continues to establish itself in Tamil Nadu politics.
