The Election Commission of India (ECI) has recognised the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as a State party in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry after the party met the prescribed criteria. The recognition marks a significant development for the party, which was previously registered but remained unrecognised. TVK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay expressed gratitude to the people following the ECI decision.

With the recognition, TVK will be entitled to have its election symbol, ‘Whistle’, reserved under the applicable election rules. State-party status also provides the organisation with certain electoral advantages and formally establishes it within the recognised party structure in the two jurisdictions. The decision comes after the party's performance in the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, TVK contested 233 of the State's Assembly constituencies. The party won 108 seats and secured a vote share of 34.92%, according to the figures cited in the report. Its electoral performance enabled it to satisfy the criteria required for recognition as a State party.

The party also contested the Assembly election in the Union Territory of Puducherry, where it fielded candidates in 28 constituencies. TVK won two seats and recorded a vote share of 16.85%. The results in both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry contributed to the party's eligibility for recognition under the ECI's prescribed conditions.

The ECI's recognition gives TVK a more established position in the electoral landscape ahead of future elections. The reservation of the ‘Whistle’ symbol is particularly significant because it allows the party to retain a distinct electoral identity when contesting elections. The status also reflects the party's performance at the ballot box since its entry into electoral politics.

Following the announcement, Vijay thanked the people for their support and acknowledged the role played by voters in the party's electoral journey. The ECI decision formally moves TVK from the category of a registered, unrecognised political party to a recognised State party in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, giving the organisation greater institutional recognition as it prepares for its future political activities.
