The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has intensified its opposition to Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu dam project by submitting adjournment motion notices in both Houses of Parliament, seeking an urgent debate on the issue during the upcoming Monsoon Session. The party has argued that the project could impact Tamil Nadu’s water security and affect the livelihoods of farmers dependent on the Cauvery river.
With Parliament’s Monsoon Session scheduled to begin on July 20, the DMK has urged the Centre to suspend regular business and take up the Mekedatu issue as a matter of urgent public importance. The party said the proposed balancing reservoir across the Cauvery River requires immediate discussion due to its potential legal, environmental and agricultural implications.
In the Lok Sabha, DMK parliamentary party leader T.R. Baalu submitted the adjournment motion notice, stating that Karnataka’s plan to construct the dam could have serious consequences for Tamil Nadu. He said the project may affect the state’s share of Cauvery water and create difficulties for farming communities, particularly those in the Cauvery delta region.

The DMK has maintained that the Mekedatu project should not move forward without addressing the concerns of downstream states. The party has repeatedly demanded that the Centre ensure compliance with the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award and the Supreme Court’s directions regarding interstate water sharing.
A similar notice was submitted in the Rajya Sabha by DMK floor leader Tiruchi Siva, who sought an immediate discussion on the project’s wider impact. He highlighted concerns related to legal issues, environmental effects and the interests of Tamil Nadu’s agricultural sector.
The twin parliamentary notices reflect the DMK’s strategy to raise the Mekedatu dispute at the national level during the Monsoon Session. The party is expected to seek Centre intervention and push for a detailed debate before any further progress is made on the proposed dam project.
