Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday made a strong political statement targeting Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, calling him the “most rejected” figure in Indian politics. He made the remark while speaking to reporters, responding to recent political exchanges between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress over economic issues and public appeals made by the Prime Minister.
Fadnavis alleged that Rahul Gandhi has faced repeated electoral rejection across the country and claimed that his political influence has remained limited in several states. He further stated that the public continues to support the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The remarks were made in a charged political atmosphere, with both national parties trading criticism over governance and economic messaging.
The statement comes in the backdrop of Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of Prime Minister Modi’s recent appeal to citizens regarding consumption habits. Gandhi, in a post on social media platform X, argued that asking citizens to reduce spending on items such as gold or foreign travel reflects deeper economic stress. He described the appeal as an indication that governance challenges were being shifted onto the public.

Rahul Gandhi’s comments were specifically directed at the Prime Minister’s suggestion that citizens should postpone non-essential expenses, including gold purchases and overseas travel, to help conserve foreign exchange reserves. He argued that over the years, the economic situation had reached a point where individuals are being advised to adjust personal consumption patterns due to broader financial pressures.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Modi had urged citizens to support what he described as “economic patriotism,” asking people to reduce avoidable foreign exchange outflows. His appeal included suggestions such as limiting gold purchases, reducing fuel consumption, using public transport, and supporting domestic products. The government said these measures are intended to strengthen economic resilience amid global uncertainty.
The exchange between ruling and opposition leaders reflects continuing political tensions over economic policy narratives in India. While the government has positioned its appeal as a collective response to global challenges such as energy price volatility and geopolitical instability, the opposition has questioned the framing, arguing that responsibility for economic conditions lies with policy decisions rather than public behaviour.
