Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan delivered a candid take on the massive crowds flocking to political rallies, including those of actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), asserting that large turnouts don’t automatically translate into votes.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Haasan emphasized that this reality applies universally, from his own rallies to those of Vijay and every other leader in India. “It is for sure, it will not get converted into votes,” Haasan stated, responding to questions about the buzz surrounding Vijay’s recent gatherings.
When pressed specifically about Vijay, the TVK chief who has emerged as a political force, Haasan reiterated, “When it is applicable to all leaders, how can we exclude Vijay? It is applicable to me and all the leaders in India.”
His remarks come amid criticism from parties like the DMK, who have downplayed the electoral impact of Vijay’s rallies, labeling them as “empty gatherings.” Vijay, however, countered such skepticism during a September 20 rally in Tiruvarur, where he directly asked the roaring crowd if they were merely spectators or committed voters. The resounding chants of “Vijay” signaled strong support, which he acknowledged with heartfelt gratitude.
Haasan, a veteran actor and politician, offered advice to Vijay, urging him to “go on the right path, proceed with courage, and do good for the people.” He noted that criticism is inevitable, not just in politics but also in cinema, where aspiring actors face similar scrutiny.
Vijay’s TVK, a fledgling party, has positioned itself as a champion of “true democracy with a conscience,” drawing thousands to its events. Yet, Haasan’s pragmatic words serve as a reminder that rallying a crowd is only half the battle—converting enthusiasm into votes remains the ultimate challenge in Tamil Nadu’s competitive political landscape.
