The CPI(M) in West Bengal has called on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to dispatch Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs to states where Bengali-speaking migrant workers face alleged harassment over their identity. Speaking at a press conference at the party’s state headquarters, CPI(M) West Bengal secretary Mohammed Salim condemned the targeting of Bengali workers in states like Odisha, Maharashtra, and Delhi, branding it a divisive tactic by the RSS and BJP-led governments.
Salim emphasized that internal migration for livelihood is a constitutional right, yet Bengali-speaking workers are being labeled as “Bangladeshis” or “Rohingyas.” He criticized the West Bengal government’s inaction, noting that its resident commissioner in Delhi failed to respond when migrants faced coercion, requiring intervention by CPI(M) leaders like Brinda Karat.
“Why isn’t Mamata sending TMC MPs to these states to protect our workers?” Salim questioned, urging the TMC to act beyond protests and ensure the safety and dignity of Bengali migrants. The call comes amid heightened tensions, with the TMC recently staging a major Kolkata rally led by Banerjee to protest similar issues, accusing BJP-ruled states of “linguistic profiling.” The CPI(M) demands stronger action to safeguard the rights of the state’s 22 lakh migrant workers.
