The Congress party intensified its campaign against alleged "vote theft" with a new viral video titled Laapata Vote, shared by former president Rahul Gandhi on X. Referencing Bollywood’s Laapata Ladies, the minute-long clip dramatizes a man reporting stolen votes at a police station, claiming “lakhs of votes” are being pilfered, sparking alarm among officers. Gandhi declared, “‘Chori chori, chupke chupke’ no more, the public has woken up,” urging citizens to fight for their electoral rights.
The Congress’ official social media echoed the message, stating, “Theft of your vote is theft of rights. Let’s raise our voice against vote theft together.” This follows another video released Wednesday, depicting a family discovering their votes were cast fraudulently at a polling booth, with culprits gesturing to an “Election Chori Aayog” officer. Gandhi had then remarked, “Theft of your vote is theft of your identity.”
The party has made “vote chori” a central issue, launching a web portal for citizens to register complaints and demand digital voter rolls for transparency. The campaign includes public outreach activities to pressure the Election Commission for accountability. Congress leaders argue that fraudulent voting undermines democracy, eroding citizens’ rights and representation.
