The Punjab Congress is witnessing a sharp escalation in internal factionalism, with supporters of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi openly challenging the leadership of Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. A large gathering of senior party leaders, former ministers, sitting MLAs and ex-legislators assembled at Channi’s residence, marking a visible show of dissent within the state unit ahead of the next Assembly elections.
The meeting has intensified what is now being described as a “Congress vs Congress” situation in Punjab, with the Channi camp pushing for a reconsideration of the current state leadership. Participants at the gathering reportedly conveyed that they would present their concerns before the party high command, seeking a review of organisational decisions and leadership appointments in the state.
Charanjit Singh Channi, in a statement, said that party leaders had met him at his residence and urged him to convey the sentiments of Punjab’s workers and leaders to the central leadership. Several leaders aligned with him argued that the party requires stronger leadership in the state to improve its electoral prospects, with some openly advocating either Channi’s appointment as state president or his elevation as the chief ministerial face.

Former legislators and party functionaries present at the meeting voiced varying levels of criticism against Raja Warring’s leadership. Some leaders demanded a change in the state Congress leadership, alleging that the current structure was not aligned with ground realities and could weaken the party’s chances in the upcoming elections. Others warned that continued organisational discontent could impact party unity and performance.
At the same time, some senior leaders attempted to strike a conciliatory tone, stating that the gathering was not intended as a rebellion against the party high command but rather an effort to communicate grassroots concerns. They emphasised that internal feedback was necessary for strengthening the party’s position in Punjab and ensuring that leadership decisions reflect worker sentiment.
The meeting included a large cross-section of Congress leaders and former representatives, signalling the depth of internal divisions within the state unit. While the Channi camp maintains that it remains committed to the Congress party, the public display of support has turned internal differences into an open leadership contest, placing pressure on the party high command to address growing factional tensions in Punjab.
