Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that Guwahati is steadily emerging as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia, highlighting the city’s growing strategic and economic importance under the Centre’s broader regional connectivity push.
In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said he reviewed multiple ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects in and around Guwahati. He added that the city, traditionally known as the gateway to Northeast India, is now positioned to play a larger role in connecting the country with Southeast Asian markets as development projects accelerate.
Sarma said Guwahati is preparing to witness several “historic moments” in the coming days, though he did not specify details of the projects under review. His remarks come amid an ongoing push by both the state and central governments to strengthen infrastructure in Assam under India’s broader Act East Policy, which aims to deepen economic and strategic ties with Southeast Asia.

Over the past several years, Guwahati has seen sustained investment in urban infrastructure, including road expansion, flyover construction, riverfront development, and improvements in public transportation systems. Authorities have also focused on strengthening multimodal connectivity through aviation, rail, and inland waterways, reinforcing the city’s role as a key logistics hub in the Northeast.
The developments align with efforts to position Guwahati as a centre for trade, commerce, education, healthcare, and investment in the region. Officials believe improved connectivity will not only boost regional economic activity but also enhance cross-border trade opportunities with countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The statement by Himanta Biswa Sarma underscores the state government’s long-term vision of transforming Assam into a strategic bridge between mainland India and Southeast Asia. With several infrastructure projects expected to reach key milestones soon, Guwahati’s evolving role is likely to remain central to India’s regional development and international engagement strategy.
