In a sensational twist, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, has accused the state police of deliberately protecting Trinamool Congress (TMC) minister Udayan Guha in a violent attack on his convoy last month in Cooch Behar. The explosive allegations have sparked a political firestorm, with the Calcutta High Court stepping in to demand answers.
Adhikari, a prominent BJP leader, claims the police ignored his formal complaint naming Guha as the mastermind behind the August 5 attack. Instead, he alleges, they filed a separate suo-motu FIR that conveniently omits Guha’s name. The Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court, in a Monday order, directed the Inspector General of Police to submit an affidavit by September 10, clarifying whether Adhikari’s FIR and the police’s version align or point to a “larger conspiracy”.
“They can’t let criminals off the hook so easily,” Adhikari posted on X, vowing to pursue justice. “The court has asked why my complaint was sidelined and why Guha’s name was left out. The truth will come out.” The incident in question saw Adhikari’s convoy, including a vehicle carrying former Union minister Nisith Pramanik, attacked allegedly by TMC supporters in Cooch Behar’s Khagrabari area. The bulletproof glass of their car was shattered, and a police escort vehicle was vandalised. The BJP labelled it a “murderous attempt” in broad daylight, accusing the police of standing by idly.

Guha, the North Bengal Development Minister and TMC MLA from Dinhata, dismissed the accusations, stating, “Adhikari can name me all he wants, but the police act on evidence. I wasn’t even near the site of the incident, and they know it.” The TMC called the BJP’s claims a “staged drama” to grab attention before the 2026 Assembly elections, while Pramanik doubled down, alleging Guha orchestrated the attack from a nearby religious institution.
The high court’s order noted that a second FIR could be valid if new evidence suggests a broader conspiracy, keeping the spotlight on the police’s handling of the case. As the deadline looms, all eyes are on whether the investigation will expose a cover-up or clear Guha’s name in this high-stakes political clash.
