The Bharatiya Janata Party’s defeat in the Datia Assembly by-election has exposed weaknesses in a constituency long associated with former state home minister Narottam Mishra. Congress veteran Ghanshyam Singh won the seat by 6,016 votes, defeating BJP candidate and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh veteran Ashutosh Tiwari.

Singh, a 72-year-old member of the erstwhile Datia royal family, entered the contest as a familiar local figure with an established political identity. His campaign focused closely on constituency-level issues and did not rely entirely on Congress’s organisational machinery, helping him connect directly with voters during the by-election.

The BJP, meanwhile, fielded Tiwari, an experienced organisation worker but a first-time electoral candidate. The decision to deny Mishra the nomination appeared to reflect the party’s assessment following the 2023 Assembly election, when his long-standing political influence was no longer sufficient to ensure a BJP victory in Datia.

However, senior BJP functionaries reportedly acknowledged that running a campaign without Mishra as the candidate, while also struggling to escape his political shadow, proved difficult. His influence had shaped the constituency’s BJP organisation for years, making the transition to a new candidate more complicated than the party may have anticipated.

The scale of the setback extended beyond the final margin, as the BJP reportedly lost ground even at polling booths associated with Mishra and district-level office-bearers. Such reversals indicated that the party’s established local network could not fully transfer its organisational strength and traditional support to Tiwari during the contest.

For Congress, Singh’s victory demonstrated the potential value of selecting a recognisable candidate and conducting a hyperlocal campaign. For the BJP, the result raises questions about leadership transition, candidate selection and its dependence on prominent individuals in traditional strongholds. The loss is likely to prompt a closer review of the party’s Datia organisation.
