The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded that Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities already recognised in state lists be included in the Central OBC list to ensure they receive benefits in central government jobs and educational institutions. Party leaders argued that the move would help extend reservation benefits to more socially and economically disadvantaged groups across the country.
According to BJP leaders, many communities that are recognised as OBCs by individual states do not automatically receive the same status under the Central OBC list. As a result, members of these communities may be eligible for reservations in state-level institutions and employment but remain excluded from benefits in central government recruitment or national educational institutions.
The party said aligning the state and central lists would remove these disparities and provide uniform access to opportunities. Leaders advocating the change stressed that several communities continue to face barriers in education, employment, and social mobility despite being recognised as backward at the state level.

The demand has also reignited debate over the process through which communities are added to the Central OBC list. Currently, the inclusion of any group in the central list requires a recommendation from the National Commission for Backward Classes and approval by the Union government. Supporters of the proposal argue that a more streamlined approach could help address long-pending demands from various communities.
Political observers note that the issue has wider implications, as many states have their own extensive lists of OBC communities that differ from the central list. Harmonising these classifications could significantly expand the number of groups eligible for reservations in central institutions.
The BJP said discussions on the issue are ongoing and that any decision would involve consultations with relevant constitutional bodies and stakeholders to ensure that the process remains consistent with existing reservation policies and legal frameworks.
